Samsung has brought a raft of new products to CES 2013 including the first curved-screen OLED TV and the promised Evolution Kit to upgrade older Samsung models.
As well as its ultra-large, Ultra HD TVs Samsung had a lot more to show off in its Smart TV offerings.
The Smart TV range has been upgraded for 2013. The new TVs feature the new and improved Smart Hub interface based around a tiled design reminiscent of Windows 8. The standout feature here is something Samsung calls S Recommendation – tailored content delivery according to viewer preferences that will bring a diet of internet video, TV show recommendations and social networking.
The promised Evolution Kit also made its debut. This little box will plug in to the back of last year’s 2012 range of TVs and add the necessary processing and software boost to bring them up to speed with the 2013 range. A small nod to backward compatibility, but a welcome one given how fast the tech is changing and how expensive a new TV is to buy.
Samsung also demoed a new OLED TV with a curved screen. The curve is meant to add an extra level of immersion to viewing, comparable to that of watching on an IMAX screen. The curved display isn’t ready for prime time just yet and Samsung is yet to release pricing or availability details – but it certainly looks good having a wraparound look and feel.
