Smart TV gaming spending to hit $1.6 billion by 2016

Smart TV gaming is on the rise and analysts predict it could be worth 1.6 million dollars by 2016.

Gaming via your TV is about to become big business, according to analyst firm IHS. Spending on Smart TV gaming currently stands at around $88 million, says a report by IHS published this week. By 2016, that could be as high at $1.6 Billion worldwide.

By them, say the analysts at IHS, over 800 million TVs will have internet capability, alongside similar capabilities in millions more Blu-Ray players and set top boxes like Google TV or Roku.

With those kinds of numbers, good quality games will not be far behind. “The sheer volume of addressable connected devices means this sector will be hard to ignore for content owners,” said IHS’ Piers Harding-Rolls.
