Twitter has made another acquisition in its bid to become THE social hub for TV viewers.
Twitter’s ambitions to harness the millions of people who tweet while they half-watch the TV is becoming clear. Now the minimalist social network has bought the social media analysts Trendrr, who specialise in tracking TV show mentions on Twitter.
Trendrr’s Mark Ghuneim said, “Having sat at this intersection of TV and social media for years, we’ve analyzed data from lots of platforms. What makes Twitter uniquely compelling among these platforms is its connection to the live moment — people sharing what’s happening, when it’s happening, to the world.
Twitter’s chief technical officer Adam Bain tweeted the following announcement: Excited to welcome @trendrr to Twitter to help us build great tools for TV ecosystem https://t.co/ylSuJzkBrD Congrats @MarkGhuneim! That ‘ecosystem is something that Twitter has been investing in heavily over the last few months.
Twitter recently introduced a new ‘TV Trends’ box to its iOS app that shows the latest information about TV shows being broadcast at that moment and offering links to Twitter threads and top tweets relating to that show. Trendrr’s metadata ought to make those boxes a bit more relevant , at least.
