Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will launch on 14 November in the US 29 November in Europe.

Sony-playstation-logoSony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 4, will hit US shops in mid-November with a European release a fortnight later. Sony officially announced the launch at the Gamescom games conference in Cologne today.

The next-gen console will go on sale for $399 in the US and £349 in the UK. In comparison, its main rival, the Xbox One is expected to cost $499 and £429 respectively. The Xbox One’s price does however include the price of a Kinect camera and motion sensor while the equivalent tech for the PS4 will be an optional extra.

Although primarily being marketed as a games console in comparison to the more multimedia-focused Xbox One, the PS4 will be capable of displaying 4K movies and Sony has shown an interest in pushing movie and TV streaming via the new console. Earlier this month Sony reportedly inked a deal with Viacom that would allow the streaming of its live TV channels, including MTV and Nickelodeon in the US. In the UK, Sony is to partner with Virgin Media, which will primarily be about broadband access but may include access to Virgin’s TV services too.
