Apple mulling November TV ‘event’

Apple is said to be considering a special event in November to launch a TV-related product.

new-apple-tv1-300x275Forbes reports on rumours that Apple is considering a launch event for some kind of TV-related product in November. Although there has been no further evidence of an actual Apple ‘iTV’ , could there be a new version of the Apple TV box or something else entirely?

MG Siegler of Google Ventures spoke about industry rumours on The Talk Show, a podcast from noted Apple fanatic John Gruber. “Not to go into rumour central here but the latest things I’ve heard are some sort of television product — not necessarily a television screen but something — could be coming as soon as this November”

Apple recently acquired the online video listings and recommendations app Matcha.tv, only to shut it down immediately. This is fairly standard behaviour for Apple when acquiring new tech that it hopes to include in future products (see also Siri) so this might mean an Apple TV refresh with new recommendation features. Or not.

When Apple last updated Apple TV, Google was struggling to compete with its own Google TV platform. In recent weeks, however, Google’s Chromecast has presented a cheap and cheerful alternative to using a set top box for video streaming. It would be out of character for Apple to release something in a knee-jerk reaction to Chromecast, but it would not be unreasonable to think that Google’s little dongle has Apple’s TV execs a little worried.
